REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY:
On my weekly recorded message I was drawn to recall how significant Remembrance Sunday was for me as a child. It was the one Sunday in the year when the 77 bus taking the family to Corpus Christi church off the Strand was diverted around Whitehall and, of course, my father would reinforce its importance by reminding us of the ultimate sacrifice so many men and women had made that we could live in peace, including those alongside whom he had fought in the First World War. We continue to lament today the unwillingness of so many to recognise that ultimately violence is not the solution to our problems because we realise that the peace we enjoy remains very fragile and still so many people continue to lose their lives in conflicts raging around the world. Nevertheless, some events in the past week, including the elections in the United States, give cause for hope that wiser counsels may still help future generations learn better ways of resolving conflict.
Again, in my recording I referred to a remarkable book I am reading, entitled ‘Before the Dawn’. It is the story of the conversion to Catholicism of Eugenio Zolli, who had been Israel Zolli, the Chief Rabbi of Rome during the Second World War. Inspired by his Catholic friends when he was a child and by Pope Pius XII’s efforts to save the Jews from the Nazi terror, he took Pius’s name, Eugenio, when he was baptised. One of the most compelling recollections he shares, which brought tears to my eyes, was describing how he was moved and influenced by the crucifix, hanging in his friend’s house when he was a child. Today, at 11.00am, once again we will gather around the Crucifix that forms our War Memorial overlooking our cemetery. We will thank God for those who have gone before us, especially those who literally lived out the Lord’s teaching that we can have no greater love than to lay down our lives for others. We will also pray with all our hearts that, inspired by our present Pope, Leo XIV, we may continue to seek ways of healing discord and division in our troubled world.

KEEPING PACE WITH EVERYTHING:
As you know, Fr Andrew and I sometimes find it just a little challenging to keep pace with everything that is going on. Recently, we have been caught up ensuring that the voting papers for our Provincial Chapter in January have reached everyone involved, including confrères in Zimbabwe. Now we can enjoy a couple of quieter weeks until they return later in the month and have to be counted! In the community, we have reached that time of the year when the heating goes on and the unwanted viruses appear.
Unfortunately, Fr Mike Henesy has a nasty dose of something which will put him out of action for a while. He has been assured that he does not need antibiotics, but it may take a week or two to clear. Please keep him and all those who are struggling like this at present in your prayers.

LIVESIMPLY TOGETHER
We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others
What if one simple act could improve mental health, strengthen immunity, and uplift everyone involved—without effort or cost? Kindness actually affects the human body on a biological level. Research shows that when someone receives kindness, their serotonin increases and their immune system strengthens. But it doesn't stop there. The person giving kindness experiences the same benefits. Even more remarkable - the observer of kindness receives those benefits simply by witnessing it. Think of the difference we could make collectively if we all did one extra act of kindness each day this week, especially on World Kindness Day 13 November.
