FROM FR TIM

✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟

SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS:

It is always good when one of the great Feasts falls on a Sunday and we are able to reflect on its significance together. November is the month when we pray for those who have gone before us and on Monday we also have All Souls’ Day. Our prayer is always that our loved ones are with the Lord and have inherited the promise that he has gone to prepare a place for us in his heavenly kingdom. In the past there was a great emphasis on the need to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and we were encouraged to offer special prayers and gain indulgences for them especially throughout this month. There is no doubt that emphases have changed and it is not always easy to be sure that we have the balance right. However, while I assure you I will be praying with you for the Holy Souls during this month, I will not return to the neurotic concern that I had when I was younger as to whether I had done enough to gain an extra soul its freedom at this time! There is so much that we do not know and will never fully understand until we too have the opportunity to meet the Lord face to face. In the meantime, while not being presumptuous, I think it is important that we approach the Lord with the trust and confidence that nothing is beyond his redeeming love. We are strongly advised that we should not canonize people at their funerals, but, as I sometimes point out at requiem Masses, at the funerals of some recent Popes, the homilies have gone close to doing just that when using images that suggest they are now looking down on us from windows higher in the sky than the one used for Papal Blessings on most Sundays. If it is any help, I will always remember my mother asking me if we can look down on our own funerals. My reply was simply: “I have no idea!”

I suggest we leave our loved ones with the Lord this November, thanking God for all the blessings they brought us, but also asking that any hurt they caused us or others will be redeemed. This, in turn, should lead us to allow the Lord to heal those areas in our own lives which prevent us from being fully committed to a life of love and service in his name.

BUILDING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER:

I would like to encourage you to read the note below from John Elcock about the proposed meeting for the evening of Tuesday 24th November, when we will launch a new way of sharing as a parish. The timing and the proposed length of the meeting plus the fact that we all may have something to contribute suggest to me an imaginative approach which I look forward to exploring with you.

LIVESIMPLY TOGETHER

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others

The feast of All Saints is an excellent opportunity to be thankful for our worldwide church. Among the saints we remember this month are: St Martin de Porres (Peru),  St Charles Borromeo (Italy), St Winifred (Wales), St Faustina Kowlaska (Poland), St Josaphat (Ukraine). St Margaret (Scotland). St Andrew Dung Lac (Vietnam), St Catherine of Alexandria (Egypt). Can we also and be thankful for the present day saints, from all over the world and from every ethnic group, who use their variety of gifts and experience to bring healing, peace and justice.

“True progress always stems from a heart open to others… and a will that seeks what unites rather than what separates.” — Magnifica Humanitas, 15
