We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others

October is UN disarmament week. When all the recent talk has been about increases in defence spending, it is currently difficult to see how we can reach a point where countries in the world would be discussing disarmament rather than creating more weapons. Only the power of prayer can persuade the leaders of nations to agree to peaceful means of resolving conflict and reducing threats of war.

“Lord Jesus; Today we strive to bring about a world where all your children live free from the threat of violence and war. May we be inspired by your love. Mary Queen of Peace pray for us”.

October is walk to school month: Do you usually drive your children to school? Is walking a possibility? Can you join with a few other parents and take turns to walk with a group of children? Fewer car journeys help to reduce pollution, helps the climate and helps children make healthy choices as they grow older. Try it once or twice and see if you can build it into your routine

 10th October is WORLD PORRIDGE DAY!

Mary’s meals set up this special day to raise funds for their amazing work; they feed 2 ½ million hungry children in 18 different countries. Just £19.15 ensures that one child receives a nutritious porridge type meal every day in their place of Education for a whole year. For more information and to donate visit www.marysmeals.org.uk. Try to mark this day by sharing a basic family meal and saying a special grace:

“Bread of heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Feed those who are hungry. O God you entrusted to us the fruits of all creation so that we might care for the earth and be nourished with its bounty”.

 Our parish always contributes generously to Family Fast Day. CAFODhelps those in poorer countries where people frequently go hungry. War and climate change are adding significantly to these problems. Please remember on this day to simplify your meals, donate saved money and think about and pray for those who are hungry; help CAFOD help those in need.

Reminder: Creation Walk Saturday 3 October. Meet at Holy Family at 11.00am to arrive at St Mark's for 12.00 noon. There will be a short prayer service and tea in the hall. All welcome. 

Did you know that in April 2026 our local councils expanded what could go in our recycling bins to include things like yoghurt pots? Check their websites to make sure you are maximising the kerbside recycling opportunities.

The Season of Creation is underway - an annual ecumenical period of prayer and action to care for the natural world. This year has a theme of living water, drawn from Ezekiel 47: 1-12, which portrays Gods life-giving water flowing from the temple of God. Water is precious and in England we're using water faster than nature can replace. The small, everyday choices made in homes and workplaces can make a big difference.

The theme for this year’s Season of Creation - 1 September to 4 October - is ‘Living Water’ as Christians around the world join together in prayer and action to protect our common home. 

There will be events in our archdiocese and in our parishes celebrating the season of creation. After our heatwaves this summer it is a perfect time for us all to reflect on what we can do. Will you be joining the creation walk on 5 September?  Will you be taking part in the plant and seed giveaway?  Is it time to support charities like Water Aid who bring the gift of sustainable water supplies to remote communities?

International Youth Day. The theme this year is "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations".

This recognises that young people everywhere share common hopes. It focuses on how to empower young people in least developed countries, places who face disproportionate challenges from economic constraints and climate change. For more information visit:

What can we do locally in our work life and in our parishes to provide young people with opportunities?

Thank you for not expecting perfection.
