The Season of Creation is underway - an annual ecumenical period of prayer and action to care for the natural world. This year has a theme of living water, drawn from Ezekiel 47: 1-12, which portrays Gods life-giving water flowing from the temple of God. Water is precious and in England we're using water faster than nature can replace. The theme for this year’s Season of Creation - 1 September to 4 October - is ‘Living Water’ as Christians around the world join together in prayer and action to protect our common home. 

There will be events in our archdiocese and in our parishes celebrating the season of creation. After our heatwaves this summer it is a perfect time for us all to reflect on what we can do. Will you be joining the creation walk on 5 September?  Will you be taking part in the plant and seed giveaway?  Is it time to support charities like Water Aid who bring the gift of sustainable water supplies to remote communities?

International Youth Day. The theme this year is "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations".

This recognises that young people everywhere share common hopes. It focuses on how to empower young people in least developed countries, places who face disproportionate challenges from economic constraints and climate change. For more information visit:

St Ignatius of Loyola, taught solidarity with the poor, the marginalised, the voiceless, saying, 'If our Church is not marked by caring for the poor, the oppressed, the hungry, we are guilty of heresy'. Pope Francis, lived Ignatian spirituality, asserting that Christ is physically and spiritually found on the margins, that we must 'walk' with the poorest and the most oppressed in order to know Christ.  Pope Leo continues to teach us that we must play our part in the struggle for social justice.

Let each of us, as individuals and collectively, seek to love God and our neighbour by living in solidarity with the marginalised and by looking for ways in which we can bring about change.

World Nature Conservation Day takes place this week, on 28 July. It aims is to promote sustainable practises and protect natural resources. There are lots of ways that we can participate in conservation; by reducing our carbon footprint, by supporting conservation organisations, by raising awareness and educating others about endangered species and sustainable living, and by thinking about our own personal consumption. This week marks Arctic Sea Ice Day. Sea ice serves as the earth's 'air conditioner'. It reflects sunlight away from our planet and regulates global climate. It provides a vital hunting ground for polar bears, supports marine life and acts as a highway for our sisters and brothers of the northern indigenous communities.

Sadly, climate change is warming the Arctic much faster than the rest of the world. Arctic Sea Ice Day highlights the importance of this crucial feature of our Common Home and focuses on what we need to do to save and protect the Arctic. This is Plastic Free July when we are encouraged to reflect on our use of plastic, particularly single-use plastics.  When two plastic particles we found in pristine Antarctic waters, the scale of world-wide plastic pollution was sadly evident.  We don’t have to travel far to witness pollution ourselves: plastic waste in soil, on grass verges, roads, in rivers and seas.  Plastic degrades very slowly and often takes hundreds of years.

This month can we try to free ourselves from plastics?  Perhaps start using a reusable water bottle or coffee cup.  Re-use, or avoid using, cling film and plastic bags.

Pope Leo’s prayer intention for July is respect for human life. This theme is at the heart of Live Simply; aiming to live in solidarity as a global family, caring particularly for those living in poverty. Pope Francis introduced the concept of ‘integral ecology’ in Laudato Si’; inviting us to see damage to the environment and social and economic systems as interrelated. As Pope Benedict wrote: ‘every violation of solidarity and civic friendship harms the environment’. 

We are called to contribute to a future where both the well-being of humanity and the environment are prioritised, with human dignity at the core.
