THE FEAST OF ST GERARD MAJELLA:

This Friday we celebrate the Feast of St Gerard and, as always, we will offer a blessing with the relic after the Noon Mass. We had a wonderful day back in April to mark the 300th anniversary of his birth and every diocese in England and Wales is having an opportunity to celebrate our special Patron of Mothers and Babies this year. We will also have the special blessings for expectant mothers and those wishing for children on Friday.

COPING WITH DISRUPTION:

On Thursday Fr Andrew and I had to slip down to London for a meeting about the restoration of St Mary’s Clapham, the church of my childhood. News that Stockwell Station had closed because of a fire, meant that our journey needed some minor adjustment, but happily our knowledge of the Underground system and the local buses meant that we arrived in good time even for lunch before the meeting. However, the disruption meant that the architect arrived a little late, though she certainly made up for lost time with a remarkable report and assessment of the overall situation. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and, although we are going to need a massive restoration appeal, she left us in no doubt about the significance of St Mary’s in the history of the Catholic Church in London and beyond. As with all major projects it will have to be phased and well managed, but we returned to Liverpool convinced that we are in good hands and that it will be manageable.

Since returning from this meeting I have been musing on the way we, as human beings, manage disruption in our lives. The Stockwell problem on Thursday caused a fair amount of chaos and many people were clearly put out, but by the same token such problems can engender a new kind of camaraderie. For example, the chap sitting next to me on the bus from Brixton to Clapham began a conversation wondering whether, like him, I had had to choose an alternative route and catch a Clapham omnibus! At the same time I used yesterday’s journeys to read a little treasure of book, ‘On Love’, (extracts  from Fr Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s writings). As with all his writings Teilhard notes the interconnectedness of the whole of creation and love as an irresistible force which will ultimately lead us to the completion of the evolutionary process. It is a universal love caught up in the mystery of Christ. He acknowledges the huge forces still at work resisting the process, but it led me to reflect again about how even our little experiences of friendship and goodwill – like the chap on the bus – speak to us of the possibilities of a better world. Compared with the heroic love expressed by those who go in to help and rescue people whose lives have been severely disrupted by war or persecution, it may seem insignificant, but I believe it is a reminder that the force for good will finally prevail in the human spirit. When the peal of eight bells (St Mary’s is the only Catholic church in London to have them) ring out again we may be one step nearer Heaven!

BISHOP ETON AT 175:

John Elcock, who gave me the Teilhard book, has produced a substantial report on our situation and you will receive this with the bulletin today. Please reflect on his findings and do all you can to respond accordingly. Note: Bishop Eton is only three years younger than Clapham as a Redemptorist foundation.
