FROM FR TIM
✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟
POPE LEO XIV:
News of Pope Leo’s lung cancer operation this week has reminded all of us of the fragility of our human condition. Of course, we join our prayers with those of people all over the world hoping that the surgery will have been a complete success and that he will soon be able to return and continue his inspiring leadership of the Church in these troubled times. I felt moved this week to read a short book, written by an American Dominican Sister, Gemma Morató Sendra, and published by Redemptorist Publications. It is entitled, 10 Things Pope Leo XIV Wants You to Know, and provides us with a compelling insight into how Leo’s experiences have shaped his vision of where the Lord is leading us all, building on his predecessor Pope Francis’s call to walk together with the Lord using the concept of synodality. I urge you to find a copy of this book and read it because I think it will help us all work together more fruitfully as we try to respond to the efforts being made in the Archdiocese to plan the future. Last weekend you received John Elcock’s summary of our consultation and last Tuesday John and I attended a meeting for deanery representatives assessing the wider local situation. It is worth noting that while the Deanery does have two parishes looked after by Religious Orders, St Anthony’s and ourselves, the plan has to envisage that there will be only five diocesan priests to serve the other eight parishes.
Note: If you would like a copy of the book mentioned above, you might wish to let the office know and we will see whether we can order some, with the proviso that Redemptorist Publications is encountering some distribution problems at present.
✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟
THE COMING WEEK:
We ask your patience during the next few days. Fr Andrew and I will be attending the funeral of Fr John Marsh, CSsR, in Birkenhead at lunchtime on Tuesday. You may recall that I noted that Fr John came from the Wirral and ministered for a long period with the American Forces. We have received a gracious letter from their Archbishop acknowledging that fact. Fr Andrew and I then have to go to Perth for a Provincial Council meeting on Thursday and another funeral in Scotland on Friday.
Fr Michael Henesy has graciously agreed to cover the Masses on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Furthermore, Hayley will not be in the office on Monday and Tuesday, so we ask you as far as possible to keep calls to the office and the monastery to the essentials this week.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A DEACON?
📅 Date: Tuesday 20 October, 7.00pm (Online).
and In Person: Tuesday 24 November, 7.00pm, St Oswald and St Edmund Arrowsmith Canon’s Hall, Ashton-in-Makerfield.
The deacon embodies the spirit of service and compassion in the Church, a man who is dedicated and humble, uniquely ordained to help both the spiritual needs and the practical needs of a community. Candidates for the diaconate are typically mature men between the ages of 30 and 65. If they are married, they must be in a stable sacramental marriage.
The journey to discern if you have a calling to the diaconate involves asking yourself If you have a genuine desire to serve God and His Church in this capacity.
We invite you to attend either or both of our enquirers’ events to learn more about the role of deacons, their ministry in parish life, and to support your prayerful discernment,

October is walk to school month: Do you usually drive your children to school? Is walking a possibility? Can you join with a few other parents and take turns to walk with a group of children? Fewer car journeys help to reduce pollution, helps the climate and helps children make healthy choices as they grow older. Try it once or twice and see if you can build it into your routine
