MAKING PREPARATIONS:
I have returned from a thoroughly enjoyable week away, realising how important it is to have time to reflect and ponder. It was one of the strange anomalies about Pope Francis that he did not seem to consider holidays important, and I think it is refreshing that, by contrast, Pope Leo clearly does make time for himself and gets away. After all, the word ‘holiday’ itself is derived from the Christian tradition of ‘Holy Days’: feast days on which we are called to set aside time to thank God for his blessings. As the summer draws to a close the country marks the occasion by having the last of its bank holidays this weekend. So in spite of the change in the weather, I hope we are all able to enjoy the extra day. No doubt many of you will be using some of the time to prepare for the new school year and all the associated challenges. At the same time we Redemptorists are preparing for the Visitation of our Province by our General Government in the latter part of September, and I have been entrusted with the task of trying to write a preparatory report, based on my own 61 years in the Congregation. Our present General, Fr Rogério Gomes, who is a Brazilian, has written to remind us that these visits are a way of offering fraternal support to one another and should not be viewed as some sort of threatening inspection as perhaps they sometimes were in the past.
The two visitors will be coming to Bishop Eton on 17th of September and moving on to Birmingham on the 19th. Because I am on the Provincial Council I will need to be there to welcome them when they arrive in Perth on the 15th and travel south with them to Liverpool. Father General himself will be coming for the final days in London, when all those who are able will gather for a meeting, while those who cannot travel and wish to partake will be able to link up online.
Please offer a few prayers that we will allow the Spirit of God to guide us through that time and enrich us and our ministry with many graces.

POPE LEO AND SAINT AUGUSTINE:
I mentioned Pope Leo, an Augustinian Friar, in my notes above and I am writing these notes on the Feast of Saint Augustine of Hippo! Perhaps one of Augustine’s most famous quotations will provide us all with food for thought in the midst of all our planning: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

BRO BENJAMIN POSVO, CSsR, RIP:
We have been praying for Bro Benjamin for the past few weeks after Frances Sibert shared the news of his serious illness at the Sunday Masses on her return from Zimbabwe. Sadly I share the news with you that Benjamin died on Thursday. His extraordinary work for the poor children of Zimbabwe is already legendary and you have been inspired to support him and his team over many years. We thank you for that and trust you will continue to support the work as it continues with Father Emerson Machepa. May Benjamin rest in peace.

EVENING PRAYER WITH THE APOSTOLIC NUNCIO

📍Location: The Metropolitan Cathedral
All are invited to assemble as our archdiocesan family at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King on Sunday 13 September at 3pm for the culmination of the Apostolic Nuncio’s visit to the archdiocese. This date coincides with the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the Metropolitan Chapter of Liverpool.
The celebration with take the form of Evening Prayer sung in the Cathedral. There will be a drinks reception following in the Cathedral crypt.
The Apostolic Nuncio will also celebrate the Solemn Mass at 11am in the Cathedral on that date.

The film features footage from last year’s National Emergency Briefing, bringing together leading UK experts in climate science, food security, health, economics, national security and nature. It presents a clear, measured overview of how the climate and nature crisis is affecting life in the UK. The initiative is non-partisan and has support from organisations including National Trust, Church of England, Exeter University, the Royal Meteorological Society, WWF, National Education Union, and many more.

The theme for this year’s Season of Creation - 1 September to 4 October - is ‘Living Water’ as Christians around the world join together in prayer and action to protect our common home.
There will be events in our archdiocese and in our parishes celebrating the season of creation. After our heatwaves this summer it is a perfect time for us all to reflect on what we can do. Will you be joining the creation walk on 5 September? Will you be taking part in the plant and seed giveaway? Is it time to support charities like Water Aid who bring the gift of sustainable water supplies to remote communities?
