FROM FR TIM
✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟
WELCOME BACK FR JOSEPH MUSENDAMI CSsR:
On Tuesday Fr Joseph takes another break from his studies in Rome and joins us until towards the end of August. We welcome him with open arms and hope he enjoys his time with us this year as much as he and we enjoyed one another’s company last year.
✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟✟
THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS:
I am preparing my notes in good time this week since I will be in Sheffield for Bishop Ralph’s celebration on Friday and joining him over the weekend as he returns to his home parish of St Benet’s in Sunderland to mark the occasion of his First Mass. It is a long time since I visited Sunderland and I look forward to reviving the many happy memories of my two spells there, firstly as Vocations’ Director and Missioner and later as Rector and Parish Priest. As with every part of Britain and many other parts of the world much has changed from those seemingly halcyon days. I say ‘seemingly’ because it is easy to forget they brought their challenges and struggles and understandably and rightly we prefer to remember the good times and the blessings. And, of course, I have made no secret of my faithful support of the now City’s football team from the time I was a little boy in Clapham. So I return to a people rejoicing in the team’s outstanding first season back in the Premiership. And while we are on the subject of football, what a sensational match that was in the early hours of Monday morning in Mexico. It brought to mind of one of my earliest Freddie Freckles’ stories: Freddie and the Football Match, which duly became the illustration for the two School Leavers’ Masses this past week. Do remember to ask God’s blessing on our children and all the young people about to move on to new schools and colleges to further their education. We well know that these are not the easiest times for them as opportunities and choices appear to be narrowing in spite of – or perhaps because of – the advances in science and technology.
On my journeys to and from London on Wednesday for my friend Gavin’s funeral I completed my reading of Magnifica Humanitas, the Encyclical by Pope Leo. It really is the most remarkable document: a commentary on the challenges which beset the world but offering a practical Christian vision of how we can respond. I do urge you to read it and I am sure, like so many who are not of our faith, you will find it a stimulating and heartening document.

CAFOD CAMPAIGN:
A petition will be available at the back of the church TODAY
Last year many parishioners here and in parishes across England and Wales, signed a petition calling for world leaders to help low income countries suffering greatly because of interest paid on debt. This year we are asking the UK government, as part of their presidency of the G20 in 2027, to find and promote ways of reducing the cost for poorer countries. On average 18% of their national income is going to service the large unfair interest rates charged by lenders, meaning less money for health care, schools, clean water etc. We need a reformed system for borrowing and lending that protects poorer countries from amassing huge debts.
Please read the letter from Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla from South Sudan on the notice board.
Please consider signing the petition with name address and postcode.

There will be a retiring collection for the Redemptorist Student Fund after each Mass next Sunday.
HOW CAN WE HELP THE PEOPLE OF VENEZUELA?
The UN estimates that millions of people have been affected by the disaster. Thousands of people have been killed, and the death toll continues to rise. Many more people are still missing. Hospitals are under extreme pressure as they treat large numbers of injured people. People in Venezuela were already struggling with basic needs and services, especially healthcare, before the earthquakes. Since the earthquakes struck last week, Caritas Venezuela has been supporting people who have lost their homes and accompanying those affected by this tragedy with practical help and compassion.

LIVESIMPLY TOGETHER

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others
This week marks Arctic Sea Ice Day. Sea ice serves as the earth's 'air conditioner'. It reflects sunlight away from our planet and regulates global climate. It provides a vital hunting ground for polar bears, supports marine life and acts as a highway for our sisters and brothers of the northern indigenous communities.
Sadly, climate change is warming the Arctic much faster than the rest of the world. Arctic Sea Ice Day highlights the importance of this crucial feature of our Common Home and focuses on what we need to do to save and protect the Arctic. Protect our Common Home and explore the 'Arctic Sea Ice Day Toolkit' on www.polarbearsinternational.org.
