ANNIVERSARIES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE:
Last weekend I drew your attention to the fact that this weekend we have special reason to celebrate a significant milestone in the history of the Redemptorists and our home in Liverpool, Bishop Eton. One hundred and seventy-five years ago on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul the first team of Redemptorists, who had arrived less than three weeks before, opened their small chapel to the general public. Within seven years the present church was built and opened with a fanfare. The Mass was an all-ticket affair and attended by many dignitaries. However, it was not until 1961 (just 65 years ago) that the church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation, became a parish church and members of the community were appointed to serve the local community. Prior to that it was the base from which our missionary work was carried out, especially in the north-west of England. The extended buildings at one time served as the Junior Seminary and later as a Retreat House: there are still clergy who recall having their annual retreats here, as well as men who came for the famous ‘Weekend Retreats’!
Above all, I think anniversaries are important because they provide us with the opportunity to look back in thanksgiving for all the blessings associated with the people and the places that have shaped our lives. As you well know, this is becoming a constant theme in my reflections because it enables me to see the connections and recognise that wonderful vision of the Jesuit Priest, Fr Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who saw the interconnectedness of the whole of creation. At the same time, hopefully, these occasions can also provide us with the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and allow the Lord to heal the hurt and forgive us our sins.

REJOICE AND BE GLAD THIS WEEKEND:
Party in the hall after the 10.00am Mass and the School Summer Fete in the afternoon.
THE WEATHER:
There may still be a few people who are in denial that global warming is a reality we as a human family need to take seriously, but this week has certainly provided us with another wake-up call. The forecast is that by the time we are celebrating on Sunday we will be enjoying some cooler air. I hope you have coped alright. As you can imagine some of the less able members of the CSsR community have found things very difficult! Let’s continue to strive to respond to the CAFOD call to live as simply as we can.

CAFOD CAMPAIGN:
Last year many parishioners here and in parishes across England and Wales, signed a petition calling for world leaders to help low income countries suffering greatly because of interest paid on debt. This year we are asking the UK government, as part of their presidency of the G20 in 2027, to find and promote ways of reducing the cost for poorer countries. On average 18% of their national income is going to service the large unfair interest rates charged by lenders, meaning less money for health care, schools, clean water etc. We need a reformed system for borrowing and lending that protects poorer countries from amassing huge debts.
Please read the letter from Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla from South Sudan on the notice board.
A petition will be available at the back of the church before and after masses on 12 July.
Please consider signing the petition with name address and postcode.

LIVESIMPLY TOGETHER
We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others
Pope Leo’s prayer intention for July is respect for human life. This theme is at the heart of Live Simply; aiming to live in solidarity as a global family, caring particularly for those living in poverty. Pope Francis introduced the concept of ‘integral ecology’ in Laudato Si’; inviting us to see damage to the environment and social and economic systems as interrelated. As Pope Benedict wrote: ‘every violation of solidarity and civic friendship harms the environment’.
We are called to contribute to a future where both the well-being of humanity and the environment are prioritised, with human dignity at the core.
