FROM FR TIM

FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS:

This weekend I will be celebrating three extra Masses for 43 of our children who will be making their First Holy Communion, and the following the Saturday there will be two more Masses for another 29. It is always a joy to be part of these occasions and as I was thinking about this year’s celebrations I began to reflect on the enormous effort that goes into the planning and preparation of the children. So, as well as congratulating the children and their families, I also want to thank Trish B and her utterly committed team who not only help the children realise just how much God loves them, but with meticulous care ensure that the ceremonies are celebrated with both joy and reverence. My thanks also to the musicians who add so much to the liturgies. At the same time I have been thinking about how our families ensure that the children are beautifully presented on the day. Understandably, we sometimes wonder whether having the children looking like little brides and grooms is ideal, but perhaps the better focus is to remind ourselves that there are references in the New Testament to the Church as the Bride of Christ, with the Eucharist making us all part of the Body of Christ.

Such a focus set my mind on a route down memory lane. When Fr Frank Dickinson and I were working together in Birmingham in the 1980s we were coping with up to 50 weddings every year and had a wonderful Marriage Preparation Team helping us prepare the couples for their great day. I always used to let Fr Dickinson open the preparation days we had with them with a wonderfully succinct introductory talk. He would assure them that we would do all we could to ensure that their big day would provide them the perfect memory they craved, At the same time, he would warn them not to concentrate solely on the day itself at the expense of ensuring that their relationship would deepen so that they would grow together in love. He would conclude with the rejoinder: “What we don’t want is for you in a little while to have a wonderful video and photographic albums of the great day, but no marriage!” Maybe I could leave you all with a similar reflection about our

First Communions. Where is it all leading? Please God, for our children and their families to a deepening and growing relationship with the Lord, and hopefully to the children wanting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in four years’ time.

PROVINCIAL COUNCIL MEETINGS:

I was in London again this week for a couple of meetings and while we had to deal with a number of challenging issues, we also had the joy of accepting the applications of two young men, who have asked to begin their training for the priesthood and religious life with the Redemptorists. Both are in their twenties, are academically gifted and have spent much time discerning God’s will for them. Please pray for them and us.

WORLD COMMUNICATIONS, SUNDAY 17 MAY:

There will be a retiring collection after each Mass TODAY:

CHURCH FLOWER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

We are looking for a couple of volunteers to help with arranging flowers in the church. This would involve choosing and purchasing flowers, displaying them on the altars, and maintaining them (all costs will be reimbursed). No professional experience is required—simple arrangements in vases are sufficient.

Ideally, this would involve refreshing the flowers every two weeks, along with occasional checks to keep them looking their best (topping up water, general tidying). If you can help in any way, please contact the parish office.

LIVESIMPLY TOGETHER

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with others

This is Laudato Si Week: we are invited to move from hope to action. Our journey of faith calls us to care deeply for our Common Home, for one another and for future generations. Pope Francis, and Pope Leo, ask us to stay awake to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.

How can I take action this week regardless of age or ability?

Perhaps I could join in Walk to School Week; pray during this Dementia Awareness Week; buy products that respect ecosystems, or reduce my waste on 22 May, International Day of Biological Diversity.
