This section of the website reflects Bishop Eton's Live Simply journey  For St Mary's journey visit https://www.stmaryswoolton.org.uk/en/living-simply

In March 2024 both parishes were awarded the Live Simply Award.
In September 2025 the parishes of Our Lady of the Annunciation Bishop Eton, St Mary's Woolton and St John Vianney joined forces to form LiveSimplyTogether

Purpose:

We care about Creation and we care about people who are living in poverty.

We celebrate the wonders of the natural world and the diversity of our brothers and sisters, both here and right across the planet.

We are really worried about the impact that the climate crisis and other environmental threats are having on our world, particularly the impact on the poor.

We are committed to promote a variety of actions and initiatives across our two Parishes, which will help us to live out our faith by caring for our common home.

Aim

We aim to be a catalyst for change, inspiring the parishioners of Bishop Eton and St Mary's to live more simply, more sustainably and in greater solidarity with the poor.

Patron

Prior to his death in April 20206 Fr Jim Casey C.Ss.R was our patron, there are no plans to replace him.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

For this year's World Environment Day, we are asked to beat plastic pollution.

LIVESIMPLY IN BISHOP ETON AND ST MARY’S.

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with each other.

5th June is World Environment Day. 8th June is World Oceans Day. We all know how single use plastics are damaging our oceans. This week think of ways in which your family can reduce its plastic use. Maybe buy fruit and vegetables loose rather than packaged.

Remember your shopping bag so you don’t need to buy carrier bags (even when shopping in town!). And families with babies—have you considered reusable nappies; they are nothing like the old terry nappies older parishioners might remember.

If all else fails—Tesco recycles soft plastics (the stuff you can’t put in the Council recycling bin).

Let’s do what we can to protect our oceans!

The webpage for  World Environment Day can be found at https://www.un.org/en/observances/environment-day and World Oceans Day is https://unworldoceansday.org/

15 June is clean air day. Air pollution is bad for our health and has a huge impact on climate change. Three things you can think about to help reduce air pollution.

  1. Use your car less – walk, cycle or use public transport.
  2. Eat less meat and dairy (animal agriculture is the largest producer of air pollutants).
  3. Plant more trees and greenery.
  4. Wood burners and Fire Pits. Do we really need them?

Let’s live more simply and help protect our environment.

This weekend marks the end of National Vegetarian Week.

Plant-based food has a much lower carbon footprint, so by choosing more veggie meals, you’re making real carbon savings! The amount of carbon saved by your veggie dinner can be the same as driving long distances in a car. The National Vegetarian Week recipes are all carbon-calculated, allowing you to see the difference you’re making by swapping even a single meal for a veggie one this week.

It’s easy to get involved: check out the recipes, spread the word on social media, eat some delicious veggie food and make your meals better by miles!

Eat veggie, cut carbon, drive change! Have a look at  https://www.nationalvegetarianweek.

LIVESIMPLY - MESSAGE 7.5.2023

We care about Creation and we care about people living in Poverty’.

Celebrating the coronation of King Charles III this weekend, we are encouraged that he is a committed environmentalist. Aged 21, he gave a speech to the Countryside Steering Committee for Wales warning against the environmental cost of oil pollution and plastic waste. He has since spoken on environmental issues at the European Parliament and at global conferences. We pray that he will use his position to encourage others to Care for our Common Home.

LIVE SIMPLY – ST MARY’S & BISHOP ETON:

We care about creation and we care about people living in poverty.

Monday is May Day the celebration of which, with maypoles and Morris dancing, dates back to our pagan heritage when the day marked the start of a new cycle of growth across the land.

Pope Francis repeatedly reminds us that it is our duty as Catholics to live sustainably with creation. So, if you are venturing out in to the garden this week to tackle the ‘new cycle of growth’, why not make a May Day resolution and challenge yourself to try something different this year – buy a packet of seeds, or take cuttings, or create a bug hotel, or start a compost heap, or instal a water butt.
