LiveSimply

BEgreenjpgLIVESIMPLY

This section of the website reflects Bishop Eton's Live Simply journey  For St Mary's journey visit https://www.stmaryswoolton.org.uk/en/living-simply

In March 2024 both parishes were awarded the Live Simply Award.
In September 2025 the parishes of Our Lady of the Annunciation Bishop Eton, St Mary's Woolton and St John Vianney joined forces to form LiveSimplyTogether

Purpose:

We care about Creation and we care about people who are living in poverty.

We celebrate the wonders of the natural world and the diversity of our brothers and sisters, both here and right across the planet.

We are really worried about the impact that the climate crisis and other environmental threats are having on our world, particularly the impact on the poor.

We are committed to promote a variety of actions and initiatives across our two Parishes, which will help us to live out our faith by caring for our common home.

Aim

We aim to be a catalyst for change, inspiring the parishioners of Bishop Eton and St Mary's to live more simply, more sustainably and in greater solidarity with the poor.

Patron

Prior to his death in April 20206 Fr Jim Casey C.Ss.R was our patron, there are no plans to replace him.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE

World Cup star, Lionel Messi, is reported to earn an annual salary alone of £50m, while Qatar is estimated to have spent upward of  £200 billion hosting the competition. By comparison, CAFOD’s total income last year was £52m!

So has there been any “living simply” around this massive event? Well at least millions of families and  close friendship groups have sat together for a couple of hours on a number of occasions (depending on team progress) in front of a TV screen, with a shared desire to support their nation. We are social animals; this shared family/friendship time, which strengthens bonds and reduces isolation at an individual level, is the very bedrock of living a simple life.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE

On Gaudate Sunday let’s celebrate with joy the work done by our long established parish groups who have been supporting the LiveSimply principles for many years. We have lots of opportunities in the lead up to Christmas to take part in special services in our parishes, our schools and in our wider community and  it is wonderful to see that many of these events are also supporting people in need. So whether it’s a donation to  Brother Benjamin and Project Zimbabwe, food bank  donations for the SVP appeal or joining the CAFOD Fun Run on 27 December, you will be living in solidarity with people in need who are less well off this Christmas.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 4TH DECEMBER 2022

The Christmas Farmers Market takes place in the centre of Woolton village on 10 December and on Allerton Rd on 17 December.

They will provide a great opportunity to buy locally grown and prepared food, as well as locally produced craft goods. You might even buy a few Christmas presents, happy in the knowledge that you are living more sustainably, as neither you nor the goods will have travelled far.

In Woolton, there will also be ecumenical carols around the Christmas tree from 10.00am—12.00pm.

LiveSimplyLIVESIMPLY Plan

Fr Tim, as our parish priest, has recently signed off the LiveSimply Plan that Bishop Eton and St Mary's have jointly submitted to CAFOD in respect of the LiveSimply Award. This is an initiative for all parishioners across both parishes who care about Creation and care for people living in poverty. Please join us and get involved.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE

COP27, concluded last weekend with a historic decision to establish a ‘loss and damage’ fund. This small step towards climate justice comes as we move into Advent when we reflect on, and prepare for, the birth of Jesus at Christmas. In keeping with everyone else at that time, Jesus and his family definitely lived simply! While it is easy to focus on the selfindulgence and over-consumption, we should also look out for those opportunities for us to follow the example of Jesus to live simply. Many opportunities will be advertised each week in this newsletter and on the noticeboard in the porch.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE

As COP 27, the UN Climate Change conference in Egypt, came to a close this week, the world’s population reached 8 billion (having passed the 4 billion mark in 1974). This total figure is forecast to increase to a peak of 10.5 billion by the 2080s before starting to decline thereafter. “Unless we bridge the yawning chasm between the global haves and have-nots, we are setting ourselves up for an 8-billion-strong world filled with tensions and mistrust, crisis and conflict.” UN Secretary-General.

What can I do?

Constantly look for ways to live simply, livesustainably with creation and live in solidarity with the poor. Please take a CAFOD World Gifts catalogue home with you from Church today and buy at least one of your Christmas gifts from that source. All the proceeds go to help the billions of have-nots.  (An electronic copy of the CAFOD World Gifts catalogue can be found by following this link: CAFOD World Gifts – CAFOD World Gifts)

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 13th November 2022

COP 27, the UN Climate Change conference is now half way through. Please continue to try to say a prayer each day for a successful outcome, particularly that the many promises and agreements will be put into action.

Thank you to the St Mary’s Children’s Liturgy team for organising Saturday’s fashion show; aiming to not only re-use/recycle items of clothing; but also raise funds for CAFOD.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE FOR HALF-TERM WEEK:

During this half term holiday, explore God's wonderous creation in the form of the green spaces around this lovely area in which we live. Check out Allerton Country Walk on the internet   (Click here for the map and guide)

FAIRTRADE

CAFOD's Living Simply programmes urges us to Live in Solidarity with people in poverty.

Fair trade promotes solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are marginalized by an unjust trade system. Fair trade connects consumers and producers in order to build positive relationships for change. In supporting more fair and equitable trade we are supporting a future of opportunity for the poor. As well as choosing products such as Fairtrade bananas there are many other options to consider: https://www.traidcraftshop.co.uk/
