We aim to live more simply, sustainably and in solidarity with each other. 

“Let us choose life! Let us choose the future! May we be attentive to the cry of the earth, may we hear the plea of the poor, may we be sensitive to the hopes of the young and the dreams of children” (Pope Francis – Address to COP 28).

Please continue to pray for the success of COP 28 as it draws to a close this week. Too many vulnerable people are already suffering hunger, thirst and displacement as a result of the climate crisis.

We learned at our Question Time that only 5% of an MP’s typical mailbox is concerned with the environment. Challenge yourself to contact the Prime Minister, our local MP or councillors directly to pass on Pope Francis’s message. Tell them how you feel about the effects of global warming and the destruction of vital habitats. This would demonstrate that they have the vital backing they need to take courageous decisions.

RECYCLE PLASTIC CHOCOLATE TUBS

We have heard of a wonderful opportunity to recycle the plastic chocolate tubs that many will enjoy over the festive season. They can be taken to Greene King pubs, including Bear & Staff, Gateacre, for recycling.

It also raises funds for Macmillan.

They are accepted between 1 January to 11 February.

NEARLY NEW FASHION SHOW.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our Fashion  show such a success, we are delighted to have raised £1444 for Mary’s meals. It really does support our Live simply aims – living simply and sustainably by raising funds for Mary’s meals and donating unsold items to asylum link, Nugent and Jospice. It’s fantastic to see our parish community of all ages coming together to support the event and to have fun.

CLIMATE CHANGE QUESTION TIME:

What can I do? The LiveSimply team will be hosting a special edition of Question Time at 7.15pm on Thursday 30 November in St Mary's church hall... just like on the telly. Come along and put your questions to the panel, including one of our local MPs.

… but what can I do?

At the end of this month global leaders will gather in Dubai for the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28). The gathering will again see intense discussion and negotiation to agree how to address the climate crisis that threatens our very existence on this brilliant planet that God has entrusted to us. On Thursday 30 November starting at 7.15pm the LiveSimply team will be hosting a special edition of Question Time at St. Mary’s. The panel, which will include the MP for Wavertree, Paula Barker, will answer questions on a range of climate and environmental issues, ranging from the COP in Dubai to our blue bins here in South Liverpool.

Please come along and find the answer to the question “… but what can I do?” Make a date in your diary. Lots more information to follow.

On the recent feast of St Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis publish a new message entitled Laudate Deum: to all people of good will on the climate crisis*. This was a follow up to his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si: on care for our common home, a clarion call to all people of the world to take swift and unified action to tackle the climate crisis.

The Pope says that now, more than ever, it’s time for each one of us to embark on a “pilgrimage of reconciliation with the world that is our common home” and make a meaningful difference. What small change can you make today towards caring for this wonderful planet we are entrusted with?

October is Mental Health Awareness Month. Throughout history, being outside in nature has been a sacred activity, a way of encountering God, and in turn, our true selves. R. S. Thomas describes encountering God out walking on the Moor. Being out there, for him, felt like entering a church, a holy space, where, “what God was there made himself felt, Not listened to, in clean colours that brought a moistening of the eye, in movement of the wind over grass”. As the days shorten let us spend some time simply being in God’s creation.

Over the last year we hope the Live Simply messages have prompted you to think about how to live more simply to help the climate.

Let’s think about food waste. Ideally just buy what you need. But how many of us attempt to compost left over food?

10 October is WORLD PORRIDGE DAY! Mary’s meals set up this special day to raise funds for their amazing work; they feed 2 ½ million hungry children in 18 different countries. Just £19.15 ensures that one child receives a nutritious porridge type meal every day in their place of Education for a whole year.

The Season of Creation 1 Sept – 4 October 2023

During the coming month of October, our focus will be on consideration of World hunger. This is the month where we celebrate the wonders of a good harvest; appreciating the hard work that goes into producing the food we all enjoy. However, we are also very aware that often it is in those parts of the world that provide us with good food, that there is greatest hunger. Let us all consider how we can respond this year to the CAFOD Family Fast Day, where we are invited to spend some time Fasting, Praying and Giving a donation.

During this ecumenical season of Creation, we pray for the protection of creation. It is a time to renew our relationships with God our Creator, and with all creation, as we join together in prayer.

We give thanks for all that God has made, repent for the damage that we have caused and commit ourselves to take action to protect Earth our common home.
