This section of the website reflects Bishop Eton's Live Simply journey  For St Mary's journey visit https://www.stmaryswoolton.org.uk/en/living-simply

In March 2024 both parishes were awarded the Live Simply Award.
In September 2025 the parishes of Our Lady of the Annunciation Bishop Eton, St Mary's Woolton and St John Vianney joined forces to form LiveSimplyTogether

Purpose:

We care about Creation and we care about people who are living in poverty.

We celebrate the wonders of the natural world and the diversity of our brothers and sisters, both here and right across the planet.

We are really worried about the impact that the climate crisis and other environmental threats are having on our world, particularly the impact on the poor.

We are committed to promote a variety of actions and initiatives across our two Parishes, which will help us to live out our faith by caring for our common home.

Aim

We aim to be a catalyst for change, inspiring the parishioners of Bishop Eton and St Mary's to live more simply, more sustainably and in greater solidarity with the poor.

Patron

Prior to his death in April 20206 Fr Jim Casey C.Ss.R was our patron, there are no plans to replace him.

HOME ENERGY EVENT 10.7.25

On 10 July, the LiveSimply team presented an informal Home Energy evening, providing attendees with practical information about making our houses more energy efficient; a key part of living sustainably.

 HomeEnergy 1  HomeEnergy 2

Dan Colby, the specialist environmental consultant who lead the event, explained the practicalities and benefits associated with ground source heat pumps, solar panels and various forms of insulation. The subsequent discussion expanded to include how we could make the Church buildings more energy efficient, net zero and global warming.

The audience of 25 parishioners from across Bishop Eton and St Mary’s were all impressed by Dan’s knowledge and experience - not to mention his affable and humorous presentation style - and left with renewed determination to live sustainably with Creation.

 LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 5.10.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

Family Fast day 3 October. We take having enough to eat for granted. CAFOD uses your Family Fast day donations to help those not so fortunate in countries around the world.

This Family Fast day, donations will also be helping some of the 1 in 10 people around the world who do not have access to clean water close to their homes. Reliance on unclean water causes diseases that we fortunately never hear of in the UK such as Cholera.

 LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 28.9.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

“Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom You light the night.”

Energy fuels our lives, but it is costly for those who can’t afford safe cooking or lighting. Some Fairtrade premiums help families switch from harmful open fires to cleaner, safer stoves.

This week, reduce your own energy use—turn off lights, unplug devices—and support a Fairtrade product that helps others do the same.

 LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 21.9.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

“Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, which is very useful and humble and precious and pure.” Clean water is a blessing, yet many farmers in developing countries struggle to access it for their crops. As we begin Fairtrade fortnight, conserve water at home and choose Fairtrade produce that supports communities in building wells and irrigation systems. Each purchase can help provide this most basic necessity. https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/fairtrade-fortnight-2025/

In his message for the Tenth World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, Pope Leo stresses that environmental justice – implicitly proclaimed by the prophets – can no longer be regarded as an abstract concept or a distant goal.

 LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 14.9.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in heaven You formed them clear and precious and beautiful.”

The moon and stars shine equally on all people, reminding us of our shared humanity. This week, find out where one of your regular food or clothing items comes from. Could you choose a Fairtrade or ethically sourced version to ensure those who made it are paid fairly and work in safe conditions?

 LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 7.9.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

Praised be You, my Lord, with all Your creatures, especially Brother Sun, who brings the day.”

As we give thanks for the sun’s warmth, we remember farmers across the world whose harvests depend on the right balance of sun and rain. This week, choose at least one Fairtrade product—such as coffee, tea, or chocolate—and pray for the producers who work hard to bring it to our tables.

  LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 31.8.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

We celebrate the 10th World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on 1 September encouraging us all to pray for our common home.  It is also the start of the season of creation with a special focus throughout September.

Pope Leo reminds us that by working with love and perseverance, we can sow many seeds of justice and thus contribute to the growth of peace and the renewal of hope.

LIVESIMPLY MESSAGE 24.8.25

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

One of our Live simply commitments is to live in solidarity with others. This month Pope Leo is asking us to pray for peaceful coexistence:

Sometimes we act as if we were alone, building walls that separate us from one another, forgetting that we are brothers and sisters. Help us to understand one another, to listen, to live together with respect and compassion.”

We all have opportunities to support others in our community, think about how you can help.

LIVE SIMPLY IN ST MARY’S AND BISHOP ETON

We aim to live more simply, sustainably and solidarity with creation.

As we prepare to celebrate the season of creation from 1 September, we take time to reflect on how each of us can make a difference by:

       Caring for our environment

Recycling and reusing wherever we can

Encouraging others to do the same

       Appreciating the gifts of nature

Taking care of people in need

       Informing ourselves and influencing others

Offering to make even small changes

       Never giving up!
