RECYCLING CENTRE VISIT

The group learn about recycling
On Tuesday 25 July, the LiveSimply group across our two parishes organised a visit to the Gillmoss Recycling Discovery Centre. Our party on the day totalled 20, ranging in age from 4 months to 89 years young, and included representatives from our Youth Justice & Peace Group.

The Centre, just off the East Lancs Road, is the initial destination for the content of our blue bins. It is sorted and then recycled in various ways, depending on what it is.

We started with a very interesting presentation by the Centre personnel, which was followed by a very lively question and answer session.
Then we went through to an elevated gallery with large windows looking out on the recycling machinery, which were an awesome sight! We saw a load of recycling being tipped out of one of the bin lorries, then we watched it going along a continuous conveyor through up to 18 machines to separate it all out in to paper/cardboard (5 sizes, all used for different things), recyclable plastic, aluminium, glass etc.

The whole visit was fascinating, and we all came away with a much clearer idea of how recycling works at the moment and ideas of what more can be achieved such that we in Liverpool can live sustainably with creation!
