MESSAGE FROM FR TIM REGARDING
FAITH REFERENCES FOR SCHOOLS
When I was appointed as parish priest of both Bishop Eton and St Mary’s Woolton in 2011, there was a clear archdiocesan policy regarding the issuing of ‘faith references’ for children applying for places in the many Faith Schools in the City of Liverpool. Because often one of the key criteria for our own Catholic Schools was baptism in the Catholic Church, we were permitted to issue such factual information, but we were not permitted to vouch for regular church attendance or offer any similar recommendations. I strictly adhered to this policy, which seemed manifestly reasonable. There is simply no way in which I could or should be expected to keep an accurate record of such matters. Furthermore, I realised that if I were to make any exceptions I would leave myself impossibly exposed and unable to be non-judgemental and impartial in all my dealings with everyone.
Although since then the lines have been slightly blurred, I have resolutely adhered to my original policy for the reasons given above. That said, I respect the right of parents to choose the school best suited for their children and I have no objection to their attending any of the schools for which I am still asked whether it is possible to provide references.
I gather most of these schools will accept the authority of others involved in the life of Church and again I have no objection to their providing these references if they feel able in conscience to do so.
Timothy J. Buckley, CSsR (Parish Priest)
