FROM FR TIM

THE LITURGICAL YEAR:

It does seem remarkable that we are nearing the end of a Liturgical Year, most of which we have not been able to celebrate properly. The churches closed before the 4th Sunday of Lent and, although we have enjoyed a few weeks recently when we were able to celebrate public Masses and we hope to be able to return to a similar programme soon, even next Easter must be in doubt in terms of being able to open up to full congregations and celebrate solemn liturgies.

However, as I suggested on my ‘Thursday Message’ there are glimmers of light and hope on the horizon and it is good to give thanks to God for all the blessings and graces that have accompanied these past months. We are learning new ways of communicating and coping with life in general and these may well stand us in good stead as we try to formulate the future of the Church at the Archdiocesan Synod next year.

THE SYNOD:

May I gently encourage you to take an interest in how things are developing and, if you feel moved and inclined, to make your contribution to the discussion. Pauline Volk (our rep from St Mary’s) and Ann O’Neill (admin), after consultation with one of the area Synod reps in the north of the Archdiocese have discovered a very user-friendly way of responding to the proposals thus far. Andy Finch (our rep from Bishop Eton) likewise will be happy if we can use this method to ensure that both parishes play their part. Please have a look at the websites for the details and see whether you can participate: the more the merrier!

(Details will be added to the website once available - hopefully early next week)

SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING

NEXT SUNDAY IS THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING and concludes the Sundays of the year. Then Advent will be upon us.

I anticipate that this year Advent will be extra special. With all the pageants and carol services that usually precede the actual festival we are sometimes in danger of being saturated before Christmas even arrives. We will not be able to prepare in that way this year: perhaps the purpose of Advent: a quiet time of prayer and WAITING may be just what we need.

CHURCH OPEN FOR PRIVATE PRAYER:

We are open for Private prayer on Sunday 9.30am—11.00am, Monday 10.00am—11.30am and Wednesday 1.00pm—2.30pm.

If you have the new track and trace NHS app please use a smart phone to register your presence by scanning the QR Code which will be available in the porch upon your arrival.

The church has been cleaned and benches have been cordoned off to meet the 1metre+ distancing rules. We are operating a one way system, entering via the main door of church; FACE MASKS MUST BE WORN and after sanitizing your hands you will be guided to your seat; one individual per bench, unless a family unit.

We ask that you try to keep touching surfaces to a minimum. Please leave via the side chapel and Hughes Room. There are posters on the door you should read before entering. Anyone with symptoms should not come into the church. Stewards will be at various points from entry to exit to ensure that   everyone adheres to the protocols.

*Please note the toilet is not in use.

PARISH OFFICE

The Parish Office will be closed during the lockdown and the administrators will be working from home with limited access. If you need to contact them please send an email to .

NO MONASTERY RECEPTION COVER

There will still be no reception cover at the monastery, so please do not call at the monastery door unless it is urgent.

Any enquiries, requests etc should be emailed to the parish office where possible or posted through the door and will be dealt with as soon as practical.

We still need to protect the vulnerable community. Thank you for your cooperation.

AN INVITATION TO PRAYER

our lady of the rosary

We have asked that in all our homes we set aside a sacred space where the family could pray, if possible, at 7.00pm each evening At the heart of the prayer will be an Act of Spiritual Communion, so dear to the heart of our Founder, Saint Alphonsus. The leaflet is available on our website, the prayer has been converted so that it is easily understood by the younger ones, but here is the original:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things and I desire to possess you within my soul.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as being already there and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.

The Redemptorist Community has adjusted the daily timetable so that we will be united in prayer with you all at that time. Also, each day we will celebrate Mass and hold all your intentions before the Lord.

MARY'S MEALS "DOUBLE THE LOVE" CAMPAIGN

A MESSAGE FROM MARY'S MEALS

So much can be asked of us at this time of year. It may be hard to always say yes. Mary said yes to being the Mother of Jesus and as a young, unmarried girl this must have been a terrifying moment for her. Yet her ‘yes’ brought Jesus into the world and changed lives forever. Throughout this year of many challenges, thanks to our generous supporters, Mary’s Meals has continued to say yes to feeding desperately hungry children with a daily meal in a place of education. Now we are delighted to share with you a new opportunity to say yes and provide 43,000 hungry children in Bong County, Liberia, with a life-changing meal at school. From 2 November until 31 January 2021, donations made to our Double The Love campaign will be matched by the UK government, up to £2 million. Please consider setting a place at our Big Family Christmas dinner table or buying a Christmas gift card on our website.

LOCKDOWN AND DOMESTIC ABUSE:

familystrifeSince the UK-wide COVID-19 lockdown be-gan, there has been a 49% increase in calls and online requests for help relating to domestic abuse.

Bishop John Sherrington said:

‘Every person has a right to live their life free from violence, abuse, intimidation and fear. Catholic parishes can play an important role in the fighting the scourge of domestic abuse, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic where we are seeing some shocking statistics from leading domestic abuse organisations. My thanks go to those organisations and individuals already working so hard to ensure that people suffering domestic abuse can live safe lives. Every local situation will differ and so our new guidance is designed to be used as an introduction to start a local project. I hope that Catholics and parishes will be inspired to take this up in their local area. Violence of this kind should never be tolerated or justified. It is an offence against the dignity of the human person.’

PRAYER AND SPIRITUALITY

PRAYER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP

The Archbishop has asked that the following prayer be widely circulated and prayed at this time of crisis:

candleA PRAYER IN TIME OF DANGER AND ILLNESS.

God Our Father,
each person is precious to You.
You are the Giver of life.
Have mercy on us and protect us
at this time, as the Coronavirus
threatens health and life.
You are an ever-present Helper
in time of trouble.
Watch over those who are
suffering, give strength to those
who are aiding the Sick and give courage
to all in this time of anxiety.
We ask this of you in the name of your Son
Jesus Christ. AMEN

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Prov 31, 10-13, 19-20, 30-31 1 Thess 5:1-6 Matt 25:14-30)

Our love must be nourished

The parable of the talents could be compared to our marriage and the consequences if we, like the lazy servant, do not work at our relationship. Avoiding conflict can mean that the opportunity for forgiveness and growth is allowed to pass by.  Let’s not allow our love for each other to simply slip away, but work to keep our life flourishing.

GENERAL INTEREST

STAND WITH POPE FRANCIS PETITION

ABOUT THE PETITION

On the eve of the Season of Creation, Pope Francis issued a profound prayer intention that the planet’s resources will not be plundered but shared in a just and respectful manner. He prays that today, not tomorrow, we will take care of Creation. Pope Francis’ leadership on the climate emergency and on the coronavirus has been unmatched. But he can’t do it alone. It’s time for the global Catholic community to rally behind his message. For that reason, Catholics are being asked to sign the Petition for just action on COVID and the Climate Emergency, showing the Pope and the world that we care about creation.

 CAMPAIGN TO CHANGE ABORTION LAWS.

Sadly abortion is currently available in the UK, right up to birth, for babies with cleft lip, cleft palate and club foot.

All of these conditions can be corrected.

A cross-party group of MPs from the three largest parties in the UK Parliament have come together to bring forward the Bill which will change the law to clarify that cleft palate, cleft lip, and club foot are not grounds for abortion in the UK.

Can you help with getting your MP to support the Bill?

Please visit www.standupandsmile.org.uk and email your MP asking them to support the Bill. It only takes 30 seconds.

CAFOD VIRTUAL FUN RUN

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM CAFOD***

The Coronavirus Pandemic may have stopped many things this year, but it won't stop our annual CAFOD Fun Run! That's right folks, you heard it here first. This year's CAFOD Fun Run will go ahead on Sunday 27th December 2020, but with a twist...!

After the success of the Great North Run, the London Marathon, and CAFOD in Lancaster's Summer of Hope 5k, this year's CAFOD Fun Run will be a virtual event!

CAFODFUNRUN

We're asking you to run, walk or toddle 5k (or whatever distance you prefer, whose checking?!) Burn off those Christmas puddings and make a donation to CAFOD via our CAFOD Fun Run JustGiving page. Even better, set up a sponsorship page for yourself, every penny counts! Simply click the 'Start Fundraising' button on our JustGiving page. https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/funrunlikenoother

All money raised will be used to continue CAFOD's vital work helping our sisters and brothers in some of the world's poorest communities. We know that times have been really tough for everyone this year and we're sorry that our usual fun physical event with our jazz band won't be able to go ahead to lift spirits.

Please do join us virtually this year and we really hope to see you back in Wavertree next year!
