From Fr Tim

The Magi – the Kings - the Wise Men: these mysterious visitors from the East reveal the paradox of where true power and authority lie. They are to be found in a little child. Like them we are invited to go down on our knees and offer our gifts: the gift above all of ourselves and our lives.

May this New Year provide us with the opportunity to renew our faith in the wonder of what has been revealed to us in Jesus of Nazareth!

He is the King of Peace, the one who brings us a wisdom that can sustain us through all the ups and downs of our lived experience.

Once again, I wish you every blessing for 2020.

Firstly, I would like to welcome Fr Beverley Ahern to the Redemptorist Community.

He has joined us from Clapham, where a major renovation of the monastery is about to take place. At 90 he is the oldest member of the Province and continues to manage extremely well in spite of the serious deterioration of his sight.

In a sense he is returning home because he was born and bred in Liverpool.

Many of you will know his brother, Raymond, and his sister-in-law, Evelyn.

Many of the Redemptorist Community will be in Perth this week for our Province Meeting. However, I have managed to arrange a noon Mass for each day this week.

Fr Pat O’Brien will celebrate on Monday; Fr Jimmy Smale on Tuesday and Thursday; and Archbishop Patrick Kelly on Wednesday and Friday: on your behalf, my sincere thanks to each of them.

All being well we will have returned in good time from Perth. So I look forward to being with you for what is always a happy and relaxed evening. Our chance to say ‘thank you’ to one another for all the good work that goes on, much of it in quiet and undemonstrative ways.

We hope you like the new larger bulletin.

When it was introduced at St Mary’s it was well received.

It provides us with more space for providing you with all the information about what is happening in the parish. At the same time we have cut down on the number we are producing and sincerely hope that you will now take them home as a valuable support and not leave them littering the church. Sadly, that has been happening all too often in recent times.

BE Green 2020

  Patron: Fr Casey

Bishop Eton Parish living simply, sustainably with creation and in solidarity with the poor

Message from the Pope:

Each of us must “… work with generosity and tenderness in protecting this world which God has entrusted to us.”

Current challenge:

Recycle all of the Christmas cards we received. Bring them along to Church this/next Sunday. The J&P Youth Group will sort them and, among other things, we will create ‘visitor cards’ for people visiting Bishop Eton.

Future challenges:

  • BE Green survey: take part in the survey in Church next Sunday 12 January.
  • Monthly ‘Walk to Church Sunday’ 26 January.
  • We’ve also challenged the Parish Core Team to ‘go paperless’ at the meeting next week. Will they manage it?

Did you know:

  • ‘Real’ Christmas trees can be recycled. There are temporary Council collection points across South Liverpool for the next few weeks, including two in Calderstones Park. (Additional Information - Temporary drop off points exist from 3rd to 31st January 2020 - see https://liverpool.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/where-to-recycle-your-christmas-tree/ for the full list of drop off points)
  • Christmas cards and wrapping  paper containing glitter, which are put in the blue bin, will NOT be recycled and will end up in landfill!

Want more info:

We have a BE Green 2020 section on the website. Among other things, see ‘the Plan’ there are more details about BE Green 2020 in BE Alive.

Reverence for the Eucharist:

Sadly in recent times, hosts have been found on the floor of both our churches. Therefore I beg all of you when receiving Communion to follow the guidance that we take a step to the side and consume the host in the presence of the minister.

Ministers, please be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious, do not hesitate to respond.

Marriage Matters Reflections for this week

A Reflection from Marriage Matters (www.twoinoneflesh.org.uk) for this Sunday

The Epiphany of the Lord (Isaiah 60:1-6   Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6   Matthew 2:1-12)

Give every fibre of our being

The gift we can give to Jesus and to one another is ourselves. No matter how long we have been married, let us still enjoy unwrapping the gift of self. Just as, through the grace of God, the ‘wise men’ went another way, not the world’s way, so can we, by giving our whole selves, every fibre of our being.
