FR TIM

BACK IN HARNESS:

I thoroughly enjoyed my week’s holiday and met up with many old friends as well as enjoying lots of wonderful walks in the country and by the sea. Among those with whom I enjoyed a drink and a bite to eat was Fr Timothy Radcliffe, the former Master General of the Dominicans. He had just returned from a month in Vietnam, where he had taken part in the Dominican General Chapter. He was tired but as buoyant as ever: meeting him is like a spiritual tonic.

My holiday was quickly followed by my participation in a short meeting with my fellow Redemptorists from across northern Europe, which was not the easiest of encounters. We are faced with many real challenges to which there is no obvious solution. I anticipate that as we approach the next few years together in the            parishes of Bishop Eton and St Mary’s, likewise we will face problems to which there is no obvious solution.

And this brings me back to a piece of very sound advice, given me by Timothy Radcliffe many years ago: “When faced as a group with problems to which there is no obvious answer, it is good to see if you can at least agree on the next step forward. If, afterwards, you have to step back and try again, so be it. SHALL WE TRY THAT FOR STARTERS?

A new safeguarding team is now in place and learning the ropes.

Please help them by responding quickly to requests to fill in forms and bring in ID for verification.

If you are hoping to start a new volunteer role in September eg Toddler Group, J&P Group, music groups, Little Church etc please contact the Safeguarding Team on the email above to start the process as soon as possible. Because of changes and an overhaul of the process it can take a few months to process to be completed. You may not start in your role until we have been notified by the Archdiocese that you have a clear DBS.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience. If you have any concerns or just want advise please email the dedicated parish email address  or contact the Safeguarding Office at the Archdiocese.

He is raising money for their mission in Rhyl, N. Wales, which is led by a musician friend of his, Major Chris Davidson. He will be looking to complete the ride in about 6hrs30, which for an amateur rider of his "profile" would be good going. Any donations would be very gratefully received. God bless. ‍

Here's the link for donating: http://www.justgiving.com/James-Hayes21?utm_id=26 If anyone would prefer to donate in cash they can drop an envelope off at the Monastery, labelled “Bro. James - Sponsored Cycle”.

 SFX College Volunteers

A couple of years ago, SFX College invited volunteer parishoners to give a minimum of one hour a week in one-to-one literacy and/or numeracy support to some of the school’s more needy pupils, working in conjunction with the school’s SEND dept. The programme has been a great success and was commented on most positively during the most recent OFSTED inspection.
There were 8 volunteers coming in to school last term.
SFX would like to renew its invitation and expand the group to help respond to the needs of their incoming Yr. 7s. If you would like to get involved or would like more information before deciding if it’s for you, contact Bro. James (College Chaplain) at

Marriage Matters Reflections for this week

A Reflection from Marriage Matters (www.twoinoneflesh.org.uk) for this Sunday

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10; Hebrews 12:1-4; Luke 12:49-53)

Our Sacrament: a sign of grace

When we married we entered into a Covenant of unconditional love, summed up in the vows we made to each other. By imitating Jesus’ unconditional love for his bride, the Church, we became a Sacrament – a sacred sign of God’s love for all to see. Living out our ‘life-style choice’ is made possible only by ‘the graces of the Sacrament’.
