The Presidents of Churches Together in England are joining with Buckingham Palace in recognising the significance of a National Day of Prayer one hundred years ago on 4 August 1918. The National Day of Prayer called that day by King George V, brought the nation together in prayer, asking God to bring peace. One hundred days later, the Great War ended. From 4 August 2018, in churches across this country, let us mark the 100 days to 11 November with prayers for peace, hope and reconciliation as part of Remembrance 100.

Dementia friendly afternoon tea and sing along

A dementia-friendly afternoon tea and sing along takes place at St. Mary's on the last Friday of every month.

Whitechapel Centre

At the Whitechapel Centre, homeless people are able to take a shower and wash their clothes. However, a lot of the time their underwear, socks and trainers have to be thrown away. The Whitechapel Centre would be very grateful for any donations of men's and women's underwear (smaller sizes), socks and trainers especially size 5/6 women or size 9 men).

Also although we all enjoy the sunshine it can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and sun stroke for people who are rough sleeping. The Whitechapel centre would welcome donations of bottled water and sun cream for us to distribute to their clients. Thank you!

Pope Francis: Reflections on The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia)

Each week we will be providing an excerpt on the Pope's letter for you to read and reflect on. The reflections have been made available by the Archdiocese’s  Adult Faith Formation department.

“To be open to a genuine encounter with others, ‘a kind look’ is essential… [it] helps us to see beyond our own limitations, to be patient and to cooperate with others, despite our differences. Loving-kindness builds bonds, cultivates relationships, creates new networks of integration and knits a firm social fabric… In our families, we must learn to imitate Jesus’ own gentleness in our way of speaking to one another”

(Amoris Laetitia 100).

It can be very difficult to look kindly at a child who is acting out, or at our spouse when he/she tunes out to your chatter. This week, look at your family members and say to yourself, “Jesus is looking at them right now too.” That may help change the way that you see them.

The Knights meet every second Thursday of the month at 8:00 pm at St Francis of Assisi meeting rooms, Earp Street Garston L19 1RT. For further information contact Aidan Carney on 0151- 427- 7126.

Perfumed Rosary Beads

St John Vianney’s Parish Sister, Sister Mary, who is now housebound, makes ‘real’ Rosary beads from real rose petals thus producing perfumed beads. She buys the accessories from overseas and then takes a couple of months preparing the crushed rose petals, until ready for beading. Sister then hand assembles the beads, the chains and crucifix complete with their presentation box, they are so blessed! Sister produces these to help raise much needed funds for those in Bangladesh who have had their villages and churches destroyed by floods. A set costs £10 and are available by ringing the Parish Office of St John Vianney, Halewood.

Saturday 6 October 2018. Both these training days take place at Irenaeus, 32 great Georges Road, Waterloo, L22 1RD. If you are interested, please contact the parish office.
