The Experiences of the Romanian Roma Community and its Holocaust.

Merseyside Council of Christians and Jews   7.30pm on Thursday 2nd August

Liverpool Reform Synagogue, Church Road North, L15 6TF.
August 2nd is the date of the liquidation of the 'Gypsy Camp' in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944.  But the 20,000 Sinti and Roma who died in Auschwitz represent only a fraction of the numbers of 'Gypsies' who suffered.

Professor Eve Rosenhaft will offer an account of the wartime events focussing on Romania and deportation of 25,000 Roma to Transnistria. Alexandra Bahor, community liaison officer with the Granby Toxteth Development Trust, whose grandparents remember the deportation, will talk about its long-term impacts and the situation of Roma in Europe and the UK today’.

This is a rare opportunity to hear about these events with Q&A.. All Welcome. There is no charge for this event but donations are always appreciated.

Whitechapel Centre

At the Whitechapel Centre, homeless people are able to take a shower and wash their clothes. However, a lot of the time their underwear, socks and trainers have to be thrown away. The Whitechapel Centre would be very grateful for any donations of men's and women's underwear (smaller sizes), socks and trainers especially size 5/6 women or size 9 men).

Also although we all enjoy the sunshine it can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and sun stroke for people who are rough sleeping. The Whitechapel centre would welcome donations of bottled water and sun cream for us to distribute to their clients. Thank you!

Pope Francis: Reflections on The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia)

Each week we will be providing an excerpt on the Pope's letter for you to read and reflect on. The reflections have been made available by the Archdiocese’s  Adult Faith Formation department.

“Patience takes root when I recognize that other people also have a right to live in this world, just as they are. It does not matter if they hold me back, if they unsettle my plans, or annoy me by the way they act or think, or if they are not everything I want them to be. Love always has an aspect of deep compassion that leads to accepting the other person as part of this world, even when he or she acts differently than I would like”

(Amoris Laetitia 92).

(Amoris Laetitia 92).

How many times do you find yourself frustrated at the imperfections of others in your family? This week, when something doesn’t go your way (and there will always be something!) tell yourself to be patient and put it in perspective. Will it matter tomorrow.

Perfumed Rosary Beads

St John Vianney’s Parish Sister, Sister Mary, who is now housebound, makes ‘real’ Rosary beads from real rose petals thus producing perfumed beads. She buys the accessories from overseas and then takes a couple of months preparing the crushed rose petals, until ready for beading. Sister then hand assembles the beads, the chains and crucifix complete with their presentation box, they are so blessed! Sister produces these to help raise much needed funds for those in Bangladesh who have had their villages and churches destroyed by floods. A set costs £10 and are available by ringing the Parish Office of St John Vianney, Halewood.
